NEWS

  • Active development of WinTorg has ceased, however WinTorg is still available and also runs with Vista and Win7: see requirements for details.
  • There is a new closely related program for Vista and Win7 available:
see Torganal2 for more spectroscopic puzzles.

WinTorg—a Windows program that shows how to identify organic compounds using spectroscopy and other data.

  • designed by an experienced chemistry teacher for university and college students beginning their study of spectroscopy
  • three registered editions are available
    • full institutional edition - has 100 unknowns (21 simple, rest more difficult)
    • short institutional edition - 21 simple unknowns only
    • student edition - has 100 unknowns but only one support program
  • each unknown has
    • 13C (25 MHz) and 1H NMR (400 MHz), IR and MS spectra and UV-vis data
    • (other physical properties and results for 19 chemical tests and 20 derivatives can be also viewed if needed)
  • contains 6 spectroscopic calculators
  • students can use spectroscopy alone, traditional qualitative tests and derivatives alone or a combination of these
  • identification can be by choosing a name or structure (if such help is allowed) or by typing a name or building a structure
  • unknowns can be allocated either by the program (randomly) or by the instructor
  • student progress is recorded and reported
  • extensive fully integrated help is available (amount given is controlled by the instructor)
  • spectroscopic assignments are given for each unknown (after each has been identified)
  • 4 support programs are included (only one in student edition)
  • unlimited use within the institution (permission is given for network use and/or to make multiple copies)
  • the program is under constant review and the author is responsive to suggestions from users
Download WinTorg demo
from Tasmania; for other options go to the WinTorg downloading page (click on "downloading" link above)

A free demonstration (shareware) version of WinTorg is available. This is fully functional but is limited to only 3 unknowns. In addition only one of the four support programs is included.
