Chemistry/CSL Schools Science Link

The scheme provides the opportunity for senior school or college students to submit samples for analysis using advanced scientific instrumentation in the School of Chemistry and Central Science Laboratory at the University of Tasmania. The scheme receives financial support from the School of Science and Technology, and is administered by the School of Chemistry which has well-developed links with science teachers, in particular chemistry teachers who are likely to be major users of the scheme.

Typical samples submitted for study could include compounds prepared in laboratory classes, environmental analysis samples, geological or biological smaples, and commercial or consumer products of interest to students or teachers. The following instrumentation is available for the scheme:

  • Infrared Spectroscopy
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy
  • Mass Spectroscopy
  • Gas Chromatography
  • Visits by teachers and students to the School of Chemistry and CSL are also encouraged.
